WHY PURE SELF DEFENCE?

Since its humble beginning in 1997, Pure Self Defence has grown in knowledge, skill and location.  Whilst staying true to its roots in Kenpo and Shootfighting it has evolved into an institution unique in style and rich in diversity, offering a variety of disciplines that separate or combined create a well rounded, confident martial artist.   Private instruction allows each individual to learn at his or her own pace; while group training creates an atmosphere of comradery, allowing skills to be honed and tested in a safe environment.  In its quest to provide the best, most in depth training possible, Pure Self Defence instructors continue to welcome knowledge from a variety of combat arts in the hopes of creating a one of a kind fighting style effective in both real life and competition fighting.

WHO ARE THE INSTRUCTORS?

The Founder and Head Instructor of Pure Self Defence Studios is Mr. Jodey Ingalls who has studied with Japanese, Korean, Chinese, American and Canadian Masters. He holds a Forth degree Black belt (Yodan) in Kenpo Karate as well as a First Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do (ITF). Mr. Ingalls is certified as Shodoka (senior Instructor) in Shootfighting under World Champion Bart Vale and has fought as a professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter.  Mr. Ingalls started to learn Martial arts and Self Defence at the age of nine, when his parents enrolled him in the Korean style of Tae Kwon Do. At the age of fifteen he started boxing, kickboxing and Greco-roman wrestling and then went on to study Kenpo Karate as a main style. While studying Kenpo in the early 90’s he was introduced to Muay Thai Kickboxing, Submission Grappling and the Philippine art known as Arnis. These martial art styles complimented his training in Kenpo, and he continues to study and upgrade his martial art knowledge and skills on a daily bases.

Other instructors at Pure Self Defence are chosen based on performance, interest and ability.  They are trained and graded by Mr. Ingalls who is the second highest ranking Canadian Black Belt in Kenpo and the Canadian representative for the ISFA. Instructors also have the opportunity to train with Mr. Vale first hand, and are certified junior instructors under his authority. 

WHAT IS SHOOTFIGHTING?

World Champion shootfighter Bart Vale is one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts in the United States. Having competed as a kick boxer and trained with Japanese masters in grappling and freestyle fighting he went on to coin the term “shootfighting” to describe his new mixed martial arts style that combined kickboxing and shooting (to rush in and take down your opponent) with his years of Kenpo Karate training.  It is a complete fighting system that takes you step by step from stand up fighting to ground submissions following real life flow drills.  

WHAT IS KENPO Karate?

Kenpo’s uniqueness lies in its comprehensive and various means of unarmed defence. It is a no-holds-barred fighting system of offensive and defensive methods emphasizing on hand and foot strikes, immobilization, control, projections, takedowns and submissions of opponents, further including weaponry and the spiritual/healing arts.  Kenpo karate is a street-wise art based on real life scenarios and offers practical self-defence techniques.  It is truly a devastating art for the opponent!

WHAT IS MUAY THAI?

This “art of eight limbs” is a fighting style combining hands, shins, elbows and knees as points of contact. It is both a practical fighting style, and spectators sport. Almost all techniques in Muay Thai use the entire body movement, rotating the hip with each kick, punch, and block. It is this along with a heavy focus on body/core conditioning that sets Muay Thai apart from other styles of martial arts.

WHAT IS THE LITTLE WARRIORS PROGRAM?

Pure Self Defence offers a program for children that is a combination of Kenpo, kickboxing, and submission grappling.  Children and youth will develop physical co-ordination, strength and flexibility as well as self discipline, respect and confidence.  In addition to physical fitness and traditional karate methods, the Little Warriors program  emphasizes a fun learning environment, using games and friendly competition, in hopes of creating life long interest in the martial arts.

WHAT IS LADIES ONLY KICKBOXING?

This kickboxing class is taught by women for women and focuses on technique, strength conditioning and cardiovascular health.  Ladies’ Only kickboxing creates a fun and comfortable environment where you can workout, release tension and also learn practical self-defence skills that allow you to stay in control and react effectively in potentially harmful circumstances.  Ladies’ Only kickboxing is a great way to get in shape, have fun, build-confidence and bring balance to your life!

WHAT IS ADVANCED FITNESS?

A personalized workout regime designed for those athletes looking to compete in the martial arts or reach other personal goals.  In order to be a viable contender in any competitive sport, top physical conditioning is essential.  Advanced fitness is an intense, rigorous workout routine, focusing on possibilities rather than limitations, that provides the drive needed for success!

HOW DO I START?

You will begin with a one-on-one FREE private consultation, where you will be introduced to your Instructor, Our Studio and the various styles and programs we offer.  This lesson is designed with you in mind. It will help prepare you for your entry into the introductory course, at the same time ensuring that you progress at a rate this is suitable to you. There is no obligation to join, however, if you decide to continue, the Introductory course gives you the opportunity of 2 more private classes and a chance to try group classes to build basic skills before making any commitment to continue.
